Aug 29, 2013 'Ensayo sobre la ceguera' captivated me as soon as I started to read the book two years ago. Oh, and that has reminded me that the tense suddenly shifts from past to present then shifted back to past then shifts again all arbitrarily. The book ended finally finally! You’ll see, it isn’t anything serious, I’ve never heard of anyone suddenly going blind, And to think I used to boast that I didn’t even need saramagi, Well it just goes to show.
This book disgusts me. Did Saramango sleep with a bleepin’ thesaurus under his pillow? No, the unnamed Doctor’s Wife only pretends to be blind so she can join her husband in the compound. I had a hard time with this book.

There’s no need, please don’t bother, he said, I’m fine, and as he slowly began closing the door, he repeated, There’s no need, there’s no need. Very bad guards -who shoot you. And then, the man with the gun, the leader, leaves the gun where she can reach it.
I don’t even want to go into the gang rape scene and the way the women embrace it as “the only way to ensure our men get fed” because some blind jerk in another ward brought a gun and is holding food hostage, but I spent entirely too much of this book brainstorming solutions for these individuals’ various problems. Even one star is too cgeuera. Return to Book Page. The Nobel Prize, huh? ceyuera

Th If you’re looking for rich characters or storytelling, look elsewhere. The people are identified not by names, for some ridiculous reason that I’m sure I’ve the point on but by their eye patch, or their dark glasses, or their squint.
One of the women in my book club described this book as tormenting her, and I think that’s an apt descriptor. We are both blind.
So reading this nesayo a no brainer, right? The men had titles like “doctor”, “the first blind man”, etc. But there’s nothing original here; at its heart, this is Lord of the Flies dressed up under a bunch of tropes that were old in antiquity.
In both cases you should know how to switch cookies back on! The story, in an extreme nutshell, is that nearly everyone’s gone blind and society falls apart as a result. The questions Saramago presents are interesting and worth devoting a novel to, but in the end, he seems more interested in the sounds of his own typing than actually answering them. But even setting that aside, I had a hard time believing in the universe Saramago created.
It will be as if we were to separate from each other in space, forever. Well, apparently, then Jose Saramago can really plunge into his auto-erotic fixation of having all women be potential rape victims and have all men be potential violent beasts!
